Lose weight without leaving home

Use household items as weights.

Sometimes getting to the gym isn’t always as easy as we plan. Here are a few ideas of what you can use and do to create a workout space at home.

1. Gather equipment

Not everyone will have a box of old barbells lying around, but most people have a few books, bottle of milk or even a cat or dog who will be more than happy to help!

Lets just say our first exercise is a squat. Doing this exercise with no weight will seem like a breeze, so pick up a few thick books and hold them above your head.

Now how much more effective does that feel?

Do the same for any exercise: pick up something of a good weight that’s just lying around and use it to your advantage.

2. How to create your routine

Break the routine down into which muscles you want to use.

Below is an example of the muscles involved to do a full body workout, and sample exercises for each muscle group.

Full body workout

  • Muscles
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Abs
  • Quads
  • Hamstrings/Glutes

Exercises

  • Chest – Push up
  • Back – Wuperman
  • Shoulders – Pike push up
  • Abs – Star fish crunch
  • Quads – Wingle leg squat
  • Hamstrings/Glutes – Single leg incline hip raises.

The combinations are really endless!

Get creative and build yourself a fun routine that you can do anywhere and everwhere (a plus if you enjoy travelling).

3. Set the atmosphere

Music

Get yourself into the right mood to get sweaty by creating yourself a fun 30 – 60 minute music playlist of fun, upbeat songs that make you want to move.

Space

Set up your workout space.

  • Move the table to the side
  • Get that rug out of the way
  • Place your mat on the floor
  • Print off your routine in fun colors and pin it up on the wall
  • Blast your music
  • Gather your equipment.

This is a fun way to find your motivation again and you really have no excuses!

Enjoy!
